Data collection on traffic situation in Cairo

Crisis statement:  Traffic congestion is expected to become worse in the next 5-10 years in Greater Cairo. Today, about 24.9 million trips are made daily in Cairo. However, data on traffic patterns are not currently being collected in a systematic way. Data on traffic trends are collected through traditional roadside surveys conducted by traffic officers and entered manually. Subsequently, there is not enough data for data visualization or mapping to have a big picture of the traffic situation on a given day or at a given time of day. The ability to mash-up data and analyze the traffic situation in real-time will be a critical input for transport planners. Critical data include, average vehicle speed, average dwelling or standing time, acceleration and de-acceleration time. Subsequently, data visualization and mapping built on top of the data collection could help the traffic police better prevent and mitigate traffic violations in a more systemic manner
